Reading: Matthew 5:43-48
“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.”
There comes a point in everyone’s life where they contemplate suicide or what it would be like if they were no longer on this earth. A lot of times this is as a result of some type of bullying. Bullying is one of the worst things that can affect a person. It can get to the point where life seems to have lost its value to you. You want to end the pain, and the affliction, and the bullying, and the hurt. You start to feel worthless. You start to feel like nobody cares about you. You want others to know how you feel, how you hurt, how much they have made your life a living hell. You want to get back at them, to cause them pain. You want them to spend a day in your shoes to see what they are really doing to you. You don’t necessarily want to tell anyone that you can’t handle a problem on your own. You realize that death is the only way out… You want to show them what it would be like without you as a human punching bag every day. It’s going to be such a relief to end all of the pain, to make them see what it’s like without you. You might even take some of them with you. You’ve made up your mind to go kill several people and then turn around and commit suicide. Death is the only way out…
This is a lie! Jesus values every life, so much so that he died a horrific death on the cross to prove it. In the days that crucifixion was popular (for lack of a better term); people would hang on a wooden cross until they asphyxiated. They could hang there for hours, even days before they died. Eventually if they were taking long enough, the Roman soldiers standing watch over the criminals and break their legs so that they couldn’t push up to get a breath of air. Jesus took a crown of thorns, like railroad spike length, in the head; he was bruised and beaten and broken. All for you. He took 39 lashes for you. Oftentimes, men would die at 39, so there was never any need to go over. And it was all for you.
Why would someone do this for you? Because he loves and cares for you, and he wants to help you realize this. Jesus is the only person who could take all that and still be alive. He is the only one who can take all the sins of the world on his shoulders and be fine. He defeated death. He defeated sin. He destroyed demons. He rose from the grave. He washed away all your sins. He is the reason that you can battle the forces of evil…and He did it because he loved you. There was absolutely nothing that you have done, are doing, or that will do that will have any impact on life after death.
Take a moment and think what all you will be missing out on if you decide that life is pointless. You will never get married. You will never have kids. You can never spend time with people you know and love ever again. You will never get smarter. You will never feel the warmth of the sun on your face or see the beauty of nature again. You will never be able to celebrate in any of your family’s birthdays anymore. You will never be able to feel the joy of having a new puppy run around in your house. You will never have the chance to grow spiritually. You have your whole life ahead of you, don’t waste it. Life is a gift, not a burden.
Prayer: Pray that kids would understand that bullying can have an effect on the rest of someone’s life. Pray that onlookers would speak up and not be silent. Pray for bullies that they would find a good role model to look up to. Pray that those being bullied would be brave enough to ask for help. Pray that someone would help those being bullied. Finally, pray that bullying everywhere could be stopped.
