We all know the feeling: sweaty palms, heart racing, gasping breath… Fear. But what happens when this feeling becomes a regular occurrence, when you can’t calm yourself down no matter how hard you try?
For the past few years, I struggled with anxiety. No matter how hard I tried, I could never completely get rid of this unhealthy restlessness. “God has a plan for your life” I always told myself. I knew this and prayed that I wouldn’t be fearful, but eventually it always returned.
This past summer, I came across Isaiah 41:10:
“fear not, for I am with you;
be not dismayed, for I am your God;
I will strengthen you, I will help you,
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Then it clicked: I had been relying on my own strength to get rid of anxiety. Sure, I had prayed about having peace and read scripture pertaining to anxiety. But I had been making a list of do and don’ts rather that solely leaning on the Lord and relying on His strength; I had head knowledge, but my heart hadn’t quite gotten it yet. What peace I had when my heart finally understood!
Now when I begin to fear, Isaiah 41:10 comes to mind and I pause to ask God to conquer this fear and to give me His peace; I can’t do it without Him. If you struggle with anxiety, I encourage you to dig into the Word–especially in the book of Psalms–and see what God says about His love and protection for you.
